“You Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light” – Psalm 18:25
The scripture above stood out to me during bible study, and it really touched my heart. There have been several times in my life where God kept my lamp burning when I was running on fumes and turned my darkness into light.
One time in particular was when I was recovering from a tumultuous relationship that required me to rebuild emotionally, spiritually, and financially. On top of being depressed because of the state I was in, I also felt a lot of guilt, shame, and anger for allowing myself to get to that point. I was able to leave the relationship with the help of the Lord. He also helped me rebuild by building trust in Him.
A normal day during this period was spent crying, performing verbal attacks on myself, feeling overwhelmed, and growing resentful of others. One day, I felt so bad that I called out to the Lord for help. He helped me feel better and got me through the day.
As time went on, I noticed that every time I prayed to God, I felt joy, at peace, and had a productive day. If I did not pray, my old patterns reappeared. The prayer I prayed was something along the lines of “Lord, please fill me where I’m empty until I overflow and please light up my dark places.” By fulfilling this prayer, the Lord taught me to rely on Him for my sustenance. The Lord was my light during that period, and He kept my lamp burning. My only job was to seek His light.
I continue to seek the Lord for my sustenance. This scripture reminded me of the Lord’s goodness and how He is always ready and willing to help. In times of darkness, it’s helpful to remember the times in your life where the Lord provided His light and love to help you come back to the light. I pray this scripture helps you if you are going through a dark time right now.
Are you going through a dark time and need the Lord’s strength and light? Pray a simple prayer to ask Him for it. Feel free to email me to pray alongside you as well.
